Physics Foundations

Learn to describe physical quantities with units, test equations using dimensions, and recognise the limits of a dimensional check.

Overview

Physics uses mathematical models to connect measurable quantities. A numerical value becomes meaningful only when its unit and physical interpretation are clear. A time of five seconds differs from a length of five metres even though the numerical value is the same.

Begin by separating a physical quantity from the unit used to express it. A distance can be written in metres or kilometres without changing the actual distance. The numerical value changes to compensate for the chosen unit. Dimensions describe a deeper relationship: speed has the dimension of length divided by time whatever compatible units are chosen.

Unit conversion and dimensional analysis are practical error checks. They help expose incompatible additions, missing powers of time and conversion factors applied in the wrong direction. They do not determine every numerical coefficient or prove that a model describes a real situation correctly.

This pathway concentrates on measurement reasoning. Work through the chapter and tutorial to practise checking an equation before inserting numbers, then use the reference links to explore the wider official curriculum.
