Defence Services Courses, Tutorials & Study Resources

Defence Services preparation guide

Defence preparation should be organised around a specific entry route, such as NDA and Naval Academy or Combined Defence Services. These routes have different written papers and service-specific selection requirements. Begin with the official notice for the entry you want, then compare the actual course curriculum with that route rather than relying on a general Defence label.

Identify the papers required for your entry

UPSC's NDA and Naval Academy papers cover Mathematics and a General Ability Test. The CDS notice distinguishes English and General Knowledge from Elementary Mathematics: the mathematics paper applies to the specified academies, while the Officers' Training Academy written scheme uses English and General Knowledge. Check the current entry-specific scheme before making a timetable. Use official previous papers to understand the work expected in each required subject, rather than transferring the pattern from another recruitment route.

Build a balanced written-examination routine

For mathematics where required, solve a problem slowly enough to explain the relation between quantities, then develop speed through similar examples. In English, practise comprehension, vocabulary in context and clear sentence interpretation. Organise general knowledge reading by history, geography, science and current issues as applicable to the official syllabus. A short explanation of why an answer is correct is more useful for revision than a collection of options alone. Give weaker required papers regular attention rather than spending every session on a favourite subject.

Use practice to find the next learning task

Attempt an official paper or a relevant mixed set under its stated conditions. Classify errors as a knowledge gap, a misread instruction, an unreliable calculation or poor time allocation. Rework selected questions without the solution and keep one corrected example for each recurring error. As the written stage is only part of the selection process, read the official description of subsequent assessments early enough to understand what they involve. Avoid treating a written score or a coaching claim as confirmation of final selection.

Check service requirements independently of course access

Review the listed course subjects, language, format and access terms against your chosen entry. Do not assume a written-subject course includes interview or other selection preparation unless its published outline says so. Course learning prerequisites are separate from entry eligibility and service standards. Confirm qualifications, age conditions, medical and physical requirements, documents and application instructions in the current UPSC or relevant service notification; these requirements vary by entry and can be amended.
