About UPPSC Examination

Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) is a recruitment body for the vacancies in State Services in the state of Uttar Pradesh through the most prestigious exam of the state, the UPPSC examination. UPPSC releases notification and invites applications to this examination every year for recruitment into various posts in departments/ministries under the government of Uttar Pradesh. So, eligible candidates can apply for this examination online after the release of notification. The purpose of this article is to give complete information about the UPPSC examination and guidance for UPPSC exam preparation. You can prepare for the UPPSC exam either through offline or UPPSC online coaching classes.

Stages of Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission Examination

Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission conducts the examination in three stages – Prelims, Mains, and Interview.

Preliminary Examination

  • In prelims there are two papers, which comprise of 150 questions of General Studies paper I as well as 100 questions of CSAT, paper II. It is important to remember that, PAPER II is qualifying in nature and only marks of Paper I will be counted in preparing merit list of Preliminary examination. Also, marks of Preliminary examination will be counted in preparing merit list of Preliminary examination only and these marks will not be counted in final selection of candidate. Hence, only marks of mains examination and interview will be counted in preparing cutoff of Uttar Pradesh Public service Commission Examination.
  • Candidates should note that paper of prelims is of two hours and there will be negative marking for wrong answers (0.66).

Syllabus of Preliminary Examination:

  • General Science : In general science basically questions are asked from; Physics, Chemistry, Biology up to 10th standard level.
  • Current Affairs of National/International importance: : Current Affairs is the biggest portion from which questions are asked. Preparation of UPPSC is dependent upon, how strong or weak your current portion is. For current affairs candidates must prepare for at least 12 months, as in recent times old current affairs is also being emphasized by UPPSC Body.
  • History of India and Uttar Pradesh : General understanding of the subject with the broad aspects of the history of Uttar Pradesh. Although the basic understanding of every topic pertaining to History of India and UP is required; But, most of topics should be read in current context.
  • Geography of India and UP; General geography and geographical division of UP and its major river systems : Questions will relate to physical, social and economic geography of the country including the main features of Indian agricultural and natural resources. Most of the questions will be asked related to particular industries and their location so, mapping work is very important to understand the basic requirement of Geography preparation.
  • Indian Polity : Questions will test knowledge on the country’s political system, Panchayati raj, community development and planning in India and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Indian Movements and Contribution of Uttar Pradesh in it : Question will relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence with special reference to Uttar Pradesh.
  • Questions based on General Mental Ability

Mains Examination

In mains examination, you will have total of eight papers:

  1. Language Paper Hindi (150 marks, 3 hours)
  2. Essay paper (150 marks, 3 hours)
  3. Paper I: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)
  4. Paper II: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)
  5. Paper III: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)
  6. Paper IV: General studies paper (200 marks, 3 hours)
  7. Optional paper I (200 marks, 3 hours)
  8. Optional paper II (200 marks, 3 hours)

Total Marks of Mains Examination - 1500 marks.

Interview Stage

  • Interview is of 100 marks. Basically it is viva type Q & A type series where, questions pertaining to current affairs and educational background are being asked from candidate.
  • The Viva-voce will be to test the personal qualities of the candidate. This test will be in matters of general interest and is intended to test the candidate’s alertness. Intelligence and general outlook. Consideration will also be paid to the bearing and physique of the candidate. It will be conducted either in Hindi or in English depending upon the option exercised by a candidate.

Eligibility Criteria – Important for UPPSC preparation

There are certain requirements to appear for the State Services Examination. We will lay down the important criteria required for appearing in the UPPSC exam.

Educational Qualification

  • In order sit in Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, candidate must have degree of recognized university equivalent to the degree of Bachelor of Science, arts .Bachelor of commerce or of any technical subject.
  • Aspiring candidate, who is in the last year of graduation, can also sit in this examination.

Age Limit

  • The candidates should not be less than 21 years and not more than 40 years before examination.
  • The lower age limit for the UPPCS is 21 years and the upper age limit is 40 years of age for the general category of students. The SC, ST and OBC candidates can claim age relaxation of 5 years over and above the upper age limit.

Cut-Off Marks

The cut off for the examination of 2017 of Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, which was announced in September 2019 was:

  • The cutoff of prelims in the general category in the executive group for the unreserved category and OBC was 128.
  • For women, the cutoff was 121.

How to Prepare for Uttar Pradesh Public Service commission

For Prelims

  • You have to focus on the basics for the UPPSC Prelims. So, read the syllabus thoroughly. Then, go through the Previous Year Question papers and understand what the exam demands. The syllabus and Questions papers will help you to decide what to study and what to omit.
  • Newspaper- Read the newspaper daily. Follow what the Centre, as well as the state, is doing for the people. You also have to pay attention to facts and famous personalities from Uttar Pradesh.
  • NCERTs- These are government authorized books and form the basis of your exam preparation. You have to read these books properly to understand advanced level books. If you have read these books before, a speed reading will also do. Do not skip these under any circumstances.
  • Read fewer books- Prepare a proper booklist for your preparation. Do not read every book that is available for a particular subject. Pick the best ones and revise those books again and again. Although you can supplement those reading. Follow the principle of Read minimum and Revise Maximum!
  • Notes- Keep your notes very short and precise. As you finish one chapter or topic, prepare notes. It will take you a long way till the final day of your exams.
  • Revision is the key- The inevitable step is revision. Revise as much as you can. And practice answer writing from the first day itself. You will be way ahead in the competition.
  • Mock tests- Appear for multiple mock tests to polish your knowledge. Regular mock tests will train your brain to get prepared for the final day. The Prelims stage is the first most important stage because it will help you move into the Mains stage. So, keep practicing by appearing for mock tests. Further, mock tests will train your brain to acquire the technique of answering by elimination method as well.

  • NCERTs - Read these books to form a strong background of the subjects.
  • Government Websites - Supplement your studies with material from government websites like Policy Research Studies, Yojana, UPSC , etc. The material on these websites is 100% correct.

  • Keep your shorter booklist - Prepare a proper booklist for your preparation. Do not read every book that is available for a particular subject.
